Contribuição da Medicina Dentária no âmbito do bioterrorismo

Abstract

Introdução: Bioterrorismo refere-se a uma estratégia de uso de violência a fim de gerar medo, e de fazer cumprir as exigências por meio de armas biológicas. Em tais situações, médicos dentistas desempenham um papel vital por meio de habilidades com base na experiência pessoal e treino. Objetivo: Avaliar o conhecimento geral sobre bioterrorismo, apresentar os agentes biológicos utilizados em bioterrorismo e expor as diferentes funções para as quais um médico dentista pode atuar durante um desastre causado por bioterrorismo. Materiais e metodos Realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados PubMed e Google Scholar utilizando as seguintes combinações: ((((((bioterrorism[MeSH Terms]) AND (dentistry[MeSH Terms]))) OR (dentistry, forensic[MeSH Terms])) AND (bioterrorism[MeSH Terms]))) OR ((((bioterrorism) AND (dentistry)) OR (forensic dentistry) AND (bioterrorism))) e « Bioterrorism and dentistry forensic and dentistry and biological weapons ». Foram encontrados artigos publicados entre 2002 e 2020 em língua inglesa e portuguesa. Dos 1967 artigos encontrados, 10 foram selecionados para este estudo. Resultados: Os estudantes de MD admitem ter pouco conhecimentos sobre o BT, o que mostrou uma falha de ensino a este nível. Diferentes estudos mostraram que os médicos dentistas pensam que podem fazer parte da equipa de primeiros socorros e podem desempenhar um papel importante nesta fase. Devem aprender a distinguir as lesões que têm manifestações na cavidade oral e no trato respiratório superior de cada agente bioterrorista. Conclusão: A maioria dos médicos dentistas possui um fraco conhecimento sobre o bioterrorismo. Assim, é importante desenvolver um programa de formação destinado a médicos dentistas, para que estejam preparados para a eventualidade de um desastre.

Background : Bioterrorism refers to a strategy of using violence to generate fear, and to enforce requirements through biological weapons. In such situations, dentists play a vital role through skills based on personal experience and training. Aim : To assess general knowledge about bioterrorism, to present the biological agents used in bioterrorism and to expose the different functions for which a dentist can act during a disaster caused by bioterrorism. Materials and methods A bibliographic search was performed in the Pubmed and Google Scholar databases using the following keywords combinations: ((((((bioterrorism[MeSH Terms]) AND (dentistry[MeSH Terms]))) OR (dentistry, forensic[MeSH Terms])) AND (bioterrorism[MeSH Terms]))) OR ((((bioterrorism) AND (dentistry)) OR (forensic dentistry) AND (bioterrorism))) e « Bioterrorism and dentistry forensic and dentistry and biological weapons ». Articles published between 2002 and 2020 were found in English and Portuguese. Of the 1967 articles found, 10 were selected for this study. Results : Dental students admit to having little knowledge about BT which showed a failure of teaching at this level. Different studies have shown that dentists think that they can be part of the first aid team and can play an important roll at this stage. They must learn to distinguish the lesions that have manifestations in the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract of each bioterrorism agent. Conclusion : Knowledge about bioterrorism is weak in most dentists. That is why it is important to develop a training program for dentists so that they are prepared in the event of a disaster.
