| pt_PT |
dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Stress is a mental or emotional strain that occurs when an individual is under pressure and although it can often have a positive influence, if it exceeds an individual's ability to cope with the situation, it can have a negative impact on mental health and well-being and potentially lead to burnout.
Burnout is the result of a long-term accumulation of negative effects of stress. Burnout syndrome is subdivided into three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and decreased personal accomplishment.
Objective: The main objective is to assess whether dentistry is a profession associated with high levels of stress and burnout.
Materials and methods: The literature searches were carried out in Pubmed and ScienceDirect, using a time restriction of 10 years. As a result of this search and in agreement with the established criteria, 15 articles were selected.
Results: After applying the eligibility criteria, 15 articles were included in this review. All articles analyzed are cross-sectional studies addressing stress, burnout and dentistry.
Conclusion: It was found that dentistry is a profession associated with high levels of stress and consequent burnout, presenting not only psychological but also physiological consequences. Age, weekly workload, work environment, time pressure and compliance with the agenda are factors in the origin of this problem. | pt_PT |
