| pt_PT |
dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Periodontal disease is a multifactorial, that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth. Indeed, several investigations have suggested that it can be influenced by several factors such as: genetic, systemic, environmental, as well as psychological. Among the psychological factors, we will focus in this essay mainly on chronic stress.
Objective: We will present the pathophysiological mechanisms of stress, it’s influence on oral health, and more specifically, on periodontal disease.
Materials and methods: A search was conducted in the PubMed database with a combination of several scientific terms. It found 348 articles that, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were considered relevant 20 articles, included in this search.
Results: The psychological state of chronic stress can influence the development, the progress, and response to treatment of periodontal disease: through indirect actions such as changes in the individual's behavior, or through direct actions like neuroimmunoendocrinological process related to immunological and pro-inflammatory consequences.
Conclusion: The role of psychological stress in the manifestation of periodontal disease has a pathological basis, since it modifies the host immune response or alters the individual's own behavior. | pt_PT |
