A eficiência da ozonoterapia como tratamento adjuvante da periodontite

Abstract

Introdução: O ozono apresenta propriedades antimicrobianas e vantagens perante o tratamento da periodontite pois permite interromper a proliferação de bactérias encontradas nas margens gengivais das bolsas periodontais e permite um aumento da regeneração dos tecidos periodontais. Objetivos: O principal objetivo desta revisão sistemática integrativa é estudar a eficiência da ozonoterapia no tratamento da doença periodontal. Material e métodos: Foram realizadas pesquisas bibliográficas nas bases de dados: PubMed (National Library of Medicine), ResearchGate, ScienceDirect e Google Académico. Os artigos incluídos foram publicados entre 2012 e 2022. Foi seguido o protocolo PRISMA e foi utilizado o modelo PICO. Resultados: Dentro dos vinte estudos aprofundados, oito estudos relataram melhorias significativas dos parâmetros clínicos com o uso de ozonoterapia como tratamento adjuvante. No entanto, seis estudos não relataram uma diferença significativa entre o grupo onde foi utilizada a ozonoterapia e o grupo sem o seu uso. Um estudo concluiu que a ozonoterapia é ineficiente perante a redução bacteriana e inflamação gengival. Dois estudos relataram melhores resultados quando foi usada a irrigação com clorexidina e um estudo relatou melhores resultados quando é utilizada a irrigação com ozono. Relativamente ao uso de lasers, um estudo relatou resultados mais favoráveis com o uso de laser e um outro estudo não verificou diferenças entre os benefícios do laser e do ozono. Conclusão: É necessário que este assunto continue a ser aprofundado para se alcançarem conclusões mais precisas. Deverão ser realizados mais estudos prospetivos com uma maior população.

Introduction: Ozone has antimicrobial properties and advantages towards the treatment of periodontitis because it allows the proliferation interruption of bacteria found on the gingival margins of periodontal pockets and it allows a regeneration increase of periodontal tissues. Objectives: The main objective of this integrative systematic review is to study the efficiency of ozone therapy in the treatment of periodontal disease. Material and Methods: Literature searches were carried out in the following databases: PubMed (National Library of Medicine), ResearchGate, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. The articles included were published between 2012 and 2022. The PRISMA protocol was followed and the PICO model was used. Results: Within the twenty in-depth studies, eight studies reported significant improvements in clinical parameters with the use of ozone therapy as an adjunctive treatment. However, six studies did not report a significant difference between the group where ozone therapy was used and the group without its use. One study concluded that ozone therapy is ineffective against bacterial reduction and gingival inflammation. Two studies reported better results when chlorhexidine irrigation was used and one study reported better results when ozone irrigation was used. Regarding the use of lasers, one study reported more favorable results with the use of laser and one other study found no differences between the benefits of laser and ozone. Conclusion: It is necessary that this matter continues to be further explored in order to reach more precise conclusions. More prospective studies with a larger population should be carried out.
