MATERIAS E MÉTODOS: Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica on-line utilizando as palavras-chave: “socket shield”; “dental implants”; “immediate implants”; “partial extraction”; “esthetic implant area”; “alveolar bone”.
INTRODUCTION: The oral rehabilitation of aesthetic areas is a great challenge, and the final results may be affected by the difficult preservation of bone anatomy and soft tissue architecture, which are essential factors for maintaining aesthetics in implant-supported oral rehabilitations.
With these critical aspects in mind, a new technique for immediate implant placement was developed: the Socket-Shield technique (SST).
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical results and the viability of the SST, used in conjunction with the immediate implants placement, to understand its effectiveness in the oral rehabilitation of aesthetic areas; also comparing it with the conventional technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online bibliographical research was carried out using the keywords: “socket shield”; “dental implants”; “immediate implants”; “partial extraction”; “esthetic implant area”; “alveolar bone”. In this work were included 22 articles dated from 2010 to 2022.
RESULTS: SST showed excellent results in preserving the alveolar bone and buccal bone plate with a very low level of marginal bone loss. Optimal maintenance of peri-implant soft tissues was also observed and medium-term viability comparable to the conventional technique was reported.
DISCUSSION: The results suggest that SST can effectively preserve peri-implant hard and soft tissues after immediate implant placement, even better than the conventional technique.
CONCLUSION: SST is not only effective in the oral rehabilitation of aesthetic areas, but it also manages to obtain better clinical results than the conventional technique; however, more long-term follow-up studies are required.
