| pt_PT |
dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is an organized sterile inflammatory process, associated with the bone remodeling cascade. The biological processes that happens during OTM is influenced by a variety of pharmacological agents that affect the rate of tooth movement by accelerating it or reducing it.
Objectives: This systematic review aims to study if the use of medication has influence in orthodontic tooth movement.
Material and Methods: A literature search was conducted on PubMed in April 2022, using the following combination of search terms: (((((orthodontic tooth movement)) OR (accelerate orthodontic tooth movement)) OR (arrests orthodontic tooth movement)) OR (modulate orthodontic tooth movement)) AND (drugs))).
Results: The research identified 139 articles, of which 13 were selected taking into account the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Conclusion: The outcome of this systematic review shows that drugs such as carbamazepine and valproic acid, injection of furmulations with RANKL or PTH/PTHrP and the use of natural substances of TCM can accelerate OTM. On the other hand, statins, especially ATV, Meloxicam, RAS-blocking (LOS) and antidepressant drugs (fluoxetin), have the capacity of reduce OTM. Local delivery of OPG-Fc and a small dose of zolendronate (biphosphonate) are effective in orthodontic anchorage. | pt_PT |
